'Avengers 4' Directors at Game Awards 2018 Fuel Square Enix Speculation

by Eric Francisco

Joe and Anthony Russo, the directors of Avengers: Infinity War and 2019’s Avengers 4 will appear at the 2018 Game Awards, Geoff Keighley’s celebration of gaming that also offers a few glimpses at the year ahead.

Is this how Marvel plans to debut the trailer for Avengers 4?

This fact alone is now fueling speculation that fans will see something new out of Square Enix’s Marvel game universe currently known as The Avengers Project.

On Thursday, Game Awards founder and host Geoff Keighley announced that the Russos would. appear at the Game Awards. “We are excited to welcome Joe and Anthony Russo (@Russo_Brothers) directors of Avengers, to the #TheGameAwards next week,” Keighley tweeted. “Don’t miss the stream live everywhere around the world on Thursday night. #WorldsWillChange”

A game awards ceremony is an unlikely place for Disney to debut the highly anticipated trailer for Avengers 4, but what’s more likely is a trailer for The Avengers Project, a game intended to kickstart a brand new interconnected game continuity. The game was first announced in January 2017 and will be developed by Crystal Dynamics, known for its acclaimed Tomb Raider reboot trilogy, and published by Square Enix, makers of the popular Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts series.

Outside of Square Enix, little is known about the nature of the new games — even what genre they will take. Unfounded rumors leaked on 4chan back in June claim The Avengers Project will be a major reboot of the 2006 console game Marvel: Ultimate Alliance that will lift story elements from the 2004 comic book storyline Avengers Disassembled written by Brian Michael Bendis.

Will the Russos in fact debut Square Enix’s Avengers Project? Aside from the Russos themselves and the folks planning the Game Awards, no one knows for sure. The Russos could even debut a new project entirely. The filmmakers are self-professed gamers whose own personal obsession with Fortnite led to the unexpected inclusion of Thanos earlier this summer.

So anything’s possible, but for Marvel fan this will almost certainly be a Game Awards worth watching.

The Game Awards 2018 will air online on December 6 at 8:30 p.m. Eastern.
