'Game of Thrones' Season 8 Spoilers: What If No One Wins the Iron Throne?

by Meredith Jacobs

If you’re a fan of Game of Thrones, it’s likely you have a theory about who will end up sitting on the Iron Throne at the end of Season 8. Will it be Jon Snow? Daenerys Targaryen? Some other Targaryen? Another Stark sibling?

Then again, this is Game of Thrones and by now you should be conditioned to expect the unexpected. In this case, some fans have a theory that suggests no one will end up on the Iron Throne by the end of GoT Season 8.

*Potential spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 8 ahead.

There are several ways this could happen, as suggested in these fan theories, but they all seem to have one thing in common: The Iron Throne is destroyed, either physically or figuratively.

Redditor u/death_by_chocolate suggests, “Jon takes the Throne long enough to destroy it with dragonfire.”

That would mean that Jon Snow would have control of the Throne long enough for Game of Thrones to technically provide an answer to the series-long question. That may be a way to appease anyone who would feel like not having someone on the Throne is a cop-out while still providing a twist.

Will anyone sit on the Iron Throne before 'Game of Thrones' ends?

HBO

This redditor isn’t the only one who thinks the Throne will be physically destroyed by the end of the HBO series, and most fans think fire will play a role as well.

“It will be incinerated,” redditor u/LowerSomerset writes.

Redditor u/BrendaofTarth also thinks fire could be involved but suggests an alternative as well. “It was created by fire, it will be destroyed by fire. Or ice,” they theorize.

Redditor u/mohelgamal has a theory that doesn’t destroy the Throne in such a violent, drastic way but instead has it “ dismantled to get all the blades out of it for some magical importance.” That would allow the Iron Throne to play a significant role at the end of the series (perhaps the final battle of the show?). Afterwards, control of the Seven Kingdoms could be decided another way. Maybe whoever has the blades?

Of course, the Iron Throne also stands for the monarchy that rules the Seven Kingdoms. Some theories suggest that not only will there not be an Iron Throne for someone to sit on, but that the entire system of governance could change as well.

Reddit u/IAmGnarles has a theory that also puts Jon on the Throne but doesn’t include him physically destroying it.

“Jon wins it and knows it’s his but he sees how poorly the events have played out in his life,” they write. “Each area governs itself with no king.”

Redditor u/jogoso2014 also proposes the end of the Throne’s existence, at least in terms of what it stands for.

“I’m going to assume the North will largely overtake huge chunks of Westeros, but it will largely be divided in pre-Targaryen ways,” they say.

Of course, this is all speculation, and it also assumes that humanity will survive the incoming White Walker invasion in the first place. But if the humans did win, you can probably rest assured that Westeros will never be the same again — Iron Throne included.

Game of Thrones Season 8 premieres in April 2019 on HBO.
