'Legacies' Landon Theories: How the Dark Dimension Explains Everything

by Meredith Jacobs

Until Legacies tells us who (or what) Landon Kirby is and how he is connected to that mysterious knife, fans are going to continue to speculate. The latest theory that makes some sense connects Landon, the knife, and the new creatures that are coming after the supernatural artifact.

Light spoilers for Legacies Season 1 Episode 5 below.

Redditor u/NovelDeparture has posted a theory that connects back to the original books on which The Vampire Diaries was based.

“I think [the creatures] are from the dark dimension,” they write. “The Dragon looked like she had lived there for a while but she also looked like she was out of time as well.”

The Dark Dimension in the original Vampire Diaries books is filled with supernatural creatures, including guardians. So could the gargoyle fit Legacies’ version of that category?

“I think that blade opened a door to another world and a bunch of new monsters came with it,” u/NovelDeparture continues, adding a possible connection for Landon. “Maybe he’s not really from Earth either and that’s why the knife reacted when he held it.”

That’s certainly possible. Landon’s backstory is still a big mystery. All we really know is that he was in foster care, and doesn’t have a home.

u/NovelDeparture even proposes a possible cliffhanger for an upcoming episode.

“[They] end up in another world where they realize they are not on Earth anymore and they see Gargoyles flying in the sky with dragons, siders and who know what else,” they write.

That would connect back to the creatures we’ve dealt with so far and show that not only do they exist (unlike what Alaric thought), but they’re not just one-offs.

Redditor u/Glarinetta agrees with this theory, pointing out that it’s strange no one’s heard of the creatures before now.

“Yet the moment Landon messes with the knife, the creatures become more common than Lizzie’s bitchy comments,” they write. “There is no way that they’ve been this entire time active on earth so the possibility that they’ve been locked somewhere like the dark dimension is very strong.”

The description of the next Legacies episode, “Malivore,” teases that “Alaric and Dorian take on the next creature to try and find out what they want and where they are coming from.”

In a preview (up top) from the CW, creator Julie Plec even acknowledges that everyone wants answers about the knife.

“Nobody knows what it does, why it does what it does, what it has to do with Landon Kirby, and most importantly, why these creatures seem to keep coming after it,” she says.

But could we be getting answers, perhaps from the dryad, the living spirit of a tree in Greek mythology, that Alaric and Dorian encounter? This creature talks and “has quite an interesting story to tell,” executive producer Brett Matthew teases in the video. So maybe…

Legacies airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. on The CW.
