'Supergirl' Season 4 Spoilers: Will Nia's Dreams Help Unmask Agent Liberty?
by Meredith JacobsThe beginning of Supergirl Season 4 introduced Ben Lockwood as Agent Liberty, the leader of an anti-alien movement. It also teased Nia Nal’s superhero destiny as Dreamer. Now, it looks like those two storylines are going to collide in Episode 8, “Bunker Hill.” But could Nia’s dreams help Kara figure out Agent Liberty’s true identity?
Spoilers for Supergirl Season 4 Episode 7 below.
Earlier this season, Manchester Black lost his fiancee, Fiona (an alien). He’s been ruthlessly going after those responsible, the anti-alien Children of Liberty, ever since. He’s even tortured and killed members, while also working with J’onn and Supergirl — at least until Episode 7.
In “Rather the Fallen Angel,” Manchester’s desire for revenge becomes more important than remaining loyal to his allies. He makes a deal with the Children of Liberty, offering to trade Supergirl for a meeting with their leader. He then lures Kara to Shelly Island, the former entry point for aliens, and hands her over. With power dampeners on the island, she can’t fight back as the Children of Liberty put her in the tower they plan to blow up.
However, Manchester soon realizes the Agent Liberty he meets with isn’t the real one. (Ben is busy prepping his report detailing James’ actions for his talk show.) Manchester kills a couple of his followers and helps Supergirl escape by destroying the power dampeners.
Manchester also presumably learns Agent Liberty’s real name, as he goes to Lockwood Family Steel at the end of the episode. It’s possible he’s just following a lead, but for now, let’s assume he knows Ben is Agent Liberty.
Meanwhile, we’ve gotten hints of Nia’s abilities. She predicted something bad would happen if James went out as Guardian, and it did: the Children of Liberty saw Guardian as their hero.
Now, in the “Bunker Hill” promo (up top), Nia tells Kara she can dream the future and Brainy thinks she can lead them to Agent Liberty. Will she succeed in doing so, or could she just lead them to Agent Liberty’s hideout when he’s not there?
Could the “chocolate-covered espresso beans” Nia mentioned upon waking up at work in episode 6 come into play in the next episode? Maybe that prompts her to tell Kara what she can do?
Episode 8 is the final Supergirl episode before the Arrowverse “Elseworlds” crossover and the midseason break, so it’s also the perfect time for Kara (or someone else) to learn that Ben Lockwood is Agent Liberty.
It’s possible that Kara will at least run into Manchester Black during her search since he seems to know more than anyone else does about Agent Liberty at the moment. If she does, could he tell her who he is? Or could he keep that information to himself so he can go after the man he holds responsible for his fiancee’s death? Manchester’s actions in Episode 7 suggest the latter.
While Brainy telling Nia she has “nothing worry about” in the promo foreshadows the opposite being true, I don’t think that will happen in this episode. Though Nia is screaming and it looks like Agent Liberty is aiming a gun at her, that’s likely a misdirect. Those two shots may not even be part of the same scene.
Supergirl airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on AMC.
