'The Walking Dead' Season 9 Spoilers: Will the Whisperers Kill a Survivor?
by Meredith JacobsFans of the The Walking Dead comics have been waiting for the Whisperers to appear for a very long time, and in Season 9, they’re finally here. We first heard them in Episode 6, and going into the midseason finale, “Evolution,” several survivors are on the path to run into them, which means trouble. Will they survive?
Light spoilers for The Walking Dead Season 9 Episode 8 below.
Based on the official synopsis, it looks like things could get pretty hairy in the mid-season finale this Sunday.
“A small rescue mission braves a dangerous herd in their hunt for a missing comrade, only to discover a surprising threat that could doom them all,” according to AMC’s description of “Evolution.”
In Episode 7, Carol turned to Daryl to keep an eye on Henry at Hilltop, but Daryl was only at the community for a few moments before he was heading back out with Aaron and Jesus.
While out trying to boost Alexandria’s radio signal, Rosita and Eugene had to hide from walkers that seemingly changed direction in Episode 6. That was new for the undead, as were the whispers coming from them. “Don’t let them get away,” one said.
That’s because these “walkers” aren’t the undead, but The Whisperers human survivors who wear skin suits to disguise themselves.
The midseason finale promo (embedded up top) confirms we’ll hear more of those whispers, including, “keep them together.” It looks like Daryl’s watching them at the time. Will he hear it?
What we do know already is that Eugene will tell the others who have come looking for him that they’re not dealing with “a normal herd” and it’s “looking” for him. With Eugene injured, a storm complicating things and only Daryl, Aaron and Jesus with him, could the Whisperers claim him as their first victim?
Eugene’s statement about the herd won’t be the first time Daryl, Aaron and Jesus notice something’s not right about these walkers. In the opening minutes of the midseason finale, posted by ComicBook.com, they see them “milling around” in a field. Daryl urges the other two along because a storm is coming. What they don’t see is that it looks like one of them turn, perhaps also sensing the incoming storm.
While those survivors may not get all the answers they’re hoping for about that herd in the midseason finale, we may find out why Michonne was so reluctant to return to Hilltop. Not only do they not get the warmest welcome upon their arrival, but they also can’t enter until they drop their weapons, as seen in AMC’s sneak peek below.
Then, in a clip posted by IGN, we learn Michonne apparently made some tough decisions that affected Hilltop, but “at least they’re alive so they can hate me for it,” she tells Siddiq.
Meanwhile, Father Gabriel is stuck back in Alexandria on babysitter duty, as seen in a clip Screen Rant posted. Even he has had enough of Negan and seems about ready to give up on “finding a person” somewhere deep inside the villain.
When Negan offers an apology upon learning he couldn’t go check on Rosita to watch over him, Gabriel snaps. “It’s bad enough I’ve got to clean up your shit, I shouldn’t have to listen to it, too,” he says.
The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on AMC.
