Does Sabrina Spellman Have a Twin?Unpacking a 'Chilling Adventures' Theory

The Spellmans might have one extra secret lurking in their family tree, and it’s one that fans of 'Sabrina the Teenage Witch' remember all too well.

There are hints sprinkled throughout Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’s first season to suggest the Spellmans might have one extra secret lurking in their family tree, and it’s one that fans of Sabrina the Teenage Witch remember all too well: Sabrina might have an evil twin out there.

Monstrous spoilers follow for all of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 1.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was only just released on Netflix last Friday, and in the very first episode, Sabrina has a vision in which her parents tend to a crying baby. But as Sabrina looks closer, she finds that there are two babies — and one of those babies has cloven feet just like Satan’s monstrous form.

Oddly, the twins in this vision aren’t specifically addressed in the series, but over the course of the following nine episodes, we do learn that visions of this kind are never quite literal. The twins could be a symbol of Sabrina’s dual nature as half-witch, half-mortal or this could even mix in a dash of foreshadowing about Father Blackwood having twins at the end of the season.

Later in the series, Sabrina’s friend Rosalind “Ros” Walker finds out that she’s going blind and also gaining a psychic power her grandmother calls “The Cunning,” granting her otherworldly visions. In one particular vision, she peers into Limbo and sees Harvey’s dead brother, but Sabrina also appears there as an ancient crone with a rope around her neck. But when Sabrina actually goes there, she’s just holding a piece of red string.

In every instance, these visions are never literal. They offer revealing details about past, present, and future, but much of what the characters see is merely symbolic. So there’s evidence that we might not want to take this whole twin thing too seriously and that the cloven-footed twin is just a representation of Sabrina’s darker nature.

Speaking of Limbo, while there, Sabrina bumps into the soul of her mother Diana who says, “They took my baby after the baptism.” Earlier in the series, it’s revealed that Diana and Sabrina’s Aunt Hilda had Sabrina baptized just days before her father Edward and Aunt Zelda promised her to the dark lord by signing her name in the book of the beast. Is Diana just referring to this? Or did someone actually take the baby that was baptized away, and that baby still out there?

There’s also the potential important connection to the Sabrina the Teenage Witch sitcom series, where Sabrina Spellman spends several seasons training to receive her Witch License. One task she must complete is to discover the Spellman family secret. That secret is that everyone in the family is born with a twin, and one of them is evil. Sabrina is the “good” one and her sister Katrina is “evil.” Both her aunts also have evil counterparts as well. (Contrary to what some think, Hilda and Zelda are not twins.)

When Zelda decides to abduct one of Lady Blackwood’s twin babies in the Season 1 finale, she says, “But we can raise her. We’ve done it before.” Is she referring to raising a young witch as they did with Sabrina? Or is she referring more specifically to stealing a baby twin and raising it as their own?

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina sends a lot of mixed signals when it comes to this “Sabrina has a twin” theory, so who knows how much is misdirection as opposed to genuine hints? It’s a good thing that Netflix is already fast at work on Season 2.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 2 has no confirmed release date, but it’ll probably be October 2019 if we had to guess.
