'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina' Season 2 Release Date, Trailers, and More
The omens look promising already.
by Corey PlanteKiernan Shipka cast a spell on viewers as the new Sabrina Spellman in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina on Netflix. Most of us signed the Book of the Beast when Season 1 debuted just before Halloween 2018, and even after the Midwinter’s Tale holiday special whet our appetites in December, all we can think about is Season 2.
Season 1 explored the dark adventures of Sabrina Spellman, a half-mortal, half-witch who lives with her two aunts and cousin in the quiet — but spooky — town of Greendale. (It’s only one town over from Riverdale as both that series from The CW and this one share a continuity in Archie Comics.) On her 16th birthday, Sabrina is slated to sign the Book of the Beast and forsake her mortal life to become a full witch, but she has other plans for her destiny. Season 1 details the fallout of Sabrina’s choice to live in both worlds, embracing the light and the darkness.
But what’s next for her after Season 1?
Full spoilers follow for Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 1.
What Is the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 2 Release Date?
Netflix announced in early December that Season 2 would be released on Friday, April 5, 2019.
Inside Vancouver reported earlier this year that the show’s production would run from March 19 to December 5. That means production on Seasons 1 and 2 was basically seamless, so the release being much sooner than October 2019 makes a lot of sense, especially when it’s named “Part 2” rather than “Season 2.”
“We went straight into the second season from the first and it’s been really so exceptionally fun to film,” lead actress Kiernan Shipka told Bloody Disgusting in an October 2018 interview. “Especially given the fact that I feel like we’re already in such a rhythm from coming out of the first season that to jump right into the second one was really, really fun and just a great opportunity to keep the momentum going.”
Is There a Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 2 Trailer?
On December 1, Netflix released a Season 2 teaser that runs about 44 seconds (above). A full trailer (below) was released on March 18.
Based on what we see in both, Sabrina Spellman’s magical powers grow in Season 2 as she acclimates to going further down the Path of Night. Satan clearly wants her to set her old life aflame and dedicate herself to evil, but she remains a part of both her mortal and magical lives.
As her powers grow, seemingly so does her sexual appetites (we knew this was an apparent side effect of becoming a full witch). In both trailers, Sabrina dances seductively with Nicholas Scratch but also clearly still harbors feelings for Harvey Kinkle. In the footage, Sabrina contends with plenty of new, supernatural threats, including demons, werewolves, and who knows what else.
Season 2 looks edgier, darker, and sexier than the first.
How Does the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 1 Ending Set Up Season 2?
Huge spoilers here for those that haven’t finished Season 1, but in the Season 1 finale, Sabrina signed her name in the Book of the Beast, essentially enlisting as Satan’s servant after spending all of Season 1 avoiding doing exactly that. She did this to gain enough power to vanquish the Greendale 13 and save all of Greendale from the Red Angel of Death the dead witches summoned.
In her final confrontation with the Greendale 13, Sabrina summoned Hellfire and destroyed the witches. For some reason, this turned her hair icy white. Based on what we know from earlier in the season, Sabrina signing the Book of the Beast means that she’s become a full witch. She’ll gradually lose her connection to the mortal world entirely, as evidenced by her rejection of boyfriend Harvey Kinkle and her going to the Academy of Unseen Arts full-time. Will she become romantically involved with the warlock Nicholas Scratch? Possibly!
There’s also the added complication that the Bride of Satan, Lilith (posing at Ms. Wardwell), revealed that Satan is grooming Sabrina to become his enforcer so that Lilith can assume a throne beside Satan. She did also say directly to Sabrina that she might become “the most powerful witch of her generation.” Stolas, her now-dead familiar, also wondered if Satan might instead be grooming Sabrina to become the queen of hell instead. These are some seriously dark tidings either way.
All of Season 1 had Sabrina straddle the line between the witch and mortal worlds, but now that she’s signed fully on for the former, Season 2 will explore the full implications of that.
There’s also the added reveal that Dr. Cerberus’ eyes glowed some otherworldly color, so it seems like the man might actually be some kind of demon.
Season 1 deviated heavily from the Archie comics this story is based on, but there’s plenty more Season 2 can adapt from.
“Sabrina definitely changes and shifts a lot,” Kiernan Shipka also told Bloody Disgusting in October 2018. “Her growth is very evident and the second season definitely has a different spin on it than the first season. They’re very different from each other.”
What New Characters Are in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 2?
Deadline reported on November 28 that Alexis Denisof and Jedidiah Goodacre had both been cast in recurring roles for Sabrina Season 2.
Denisof, who most fans might recognize as Wesley from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, will play “Adam Masters, the boyfriend of Mary Wardwell who’s described as “handsome and charming.” He returns to Greendale after working oversee for a time with Physicians Without Frontiers. But Deadline also used the word “fiancé” so Ms. Wardwell might already be engaged. It’s just too bad she’s now possessed by the Bride of Satan.
“We thought that could be a very interesting story to have Madam Satan meet someone who didn’t know her as Madam Satan, and only knows her as Mary Wardwell,” showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told The Wrap. “And we thought it would be interesting to see how he treated her, and if that affected how she thought of herself and how she thought of her relationship with the Dark Lord.
Jedidiah Goodacre will play a warlock named Dorian Gray. He owns an exclusive nightclub called Dorian’s Gray Room and is described as “an enigmatic gentleman of an indeterminate age and is very good at keeping secrets, especially his own — a cursed portrait he hides from prying eyes.” So in case there were any doubts about the connection to Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, dispel them here. This Dorian Gray probably has a magical painting that makes him completely immortal.
Aguirre-Sacasa described Dorian Gray as one of his “favorite characters from Gothic literature,” adding that “his is one of the most famous deals with the Devil.” It’s actually quite fitting that he should appear in a show like this.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 1 is now available to stream on Netflix.
