'Daredevil' Season 3 Villain: Wilson Fisk Actor Says There Are Two Kingpins
by Eric FranciscoIn Marvel’s Daredevil Season 3, streaming now on Netflix, Vincent D’Onofrio returns as a series regular as Wilson Fisk (AKA Kingpin) plots his way out of prison and into a luxury suite where he’s monitored by the FBI. But as Fisk returns to public life, D’Onofrio says there’s another Kingpin — one that exists only in the head of Matt Murdock.
In an interview with Decider, D’Onofrio says he worked closely with fellow Daredevil co-star Charlie Cox “to make sure that we were thinking the same thing about the dialogue” that Matt Murdock hears when he imagines Fisk in his subconscious.
While D’Onofrio explains that his usual Fisk voice “is a very kind of emotional voice” from an “emotional place,” the Fisk he plays in Murdock’s head sounds more violent. “[I]n Daredevil’s mind stuff, I just sped the cadence up and I made it more jarring, like stabbing at him with words with a quicker pace. So that’s very different from what he’s like in real life, or so to speak.”
D’Onofrio commends co-star Charlie Cox for helping him find the specific tone of Wilson Fisk that Matt Murdock hears.
“Charlie and I, we work really well together,” he said. “He’s a great actor and great person to be with on a set. He’s very committed and wants things to be done the correct way.”
Daredevil’s imagined version of Fisk is just the latest in a long line of recurring tropes seen in many other superhero media, such as in Season 2 of Jessica Jones with David Tennant’s Kilgrave and in the video game Batman: Arkham Knight with Mark Hamill’s Joker taunting Batman.
