'American Horror Story' Season 8 Easter Eggs: Roanoke Returns in Episode 6
Is there room in 'Apocalypse' for a third crossover story?
by Josie Rhodes CookIt’s safe to say that the “Return to Murder House” episode of American Horror Story Season 8 is something fans have been waiting for for a very long time. Back in 2016, show creator Ryan Murphy announced plans for a crossover season featuring Murder House and Coven, and two years later it finally happened. In American Horror Story Season 8 Episode 6, we finally returned to the Murder House, but the show may already be teasing yet another crossover for its “Apocalypse” season.
In “Return to Murder House,” Madison Montgomery — played by Emma Roberts — visits the Murder House to learn about a new Season 8 character named Michael Langdon who was born in the house and may or may not be the Antichrist. Behold Chablis makes the trip with her, and they get a chance to speak with several spirits in the house that AHS fans know and love.
Warning: Major spoilers ahead, including in the videos below.
In particular, Madison speaks separately with both Tate and Violet. In a rather stunning change of heart, she feels bad for them, and sort of plays witchy matchmaker for the couple before the episode concludes.
The show implies that Tate was never really the monster he was portrayed as in the first season of the show, and that the house and its evil influence made him that way. He seems like a totally changed man, and is still waiting around for Violet when we first see him again.
But Violet is still understandably wary, and even after Madison tells her “any evil inside Tate left with Michael,” she finds it hard to believe.
So Madison gives her a little push. She blows powder into Violet’s face that seems to help her “see” the truth, likely as part of a spell. Tate and Violet then reunite and finally get a happy ending, much to the delight of shippers everywhere.
You may recall that in American Horror Story Season 6 (Roanoke), the witch character Scáthach did something similar, blowing a dark enchanted powder into another character’s eyes. It’s also worth noting that Scáthach is the original Supreme according to showrunner Ryan Murphy, so there’s a clear connection between that Season 6 witch and Coven’s Madison.
Additionally, a few disciples of Satan — including Miriam Mead — come to the Murder House in the latest episode to perform a ritual in which they rip the heart out of a young woman. Michael is then presented with the heart and starts to eat it as a Satanic shadow rises behind him.
AHS fans may recall that Scáthach also had the Butcher and Lee Harris eat boar hearts in Roanoke. It’s not exactly the same, but it certainly is reminiscent of that past season of American Horror Story.
But is enough to suggest a full-blown crossover? And will we see Scáthach show up in AHS Season 8? There are only a few more episodes left to find out.
American Horror Story airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. on FX.
