'Hellboy' 2019 Trailer: Video Recap of the David Harbour Reboot Teaser

Almost as good as seeing the actual thing.

by Jake Kleinman

Last weekend, any Hellboy fans lucky enough to be at New York Comic Con got an early look at the trailer for the 2019 reboot of Hellboy, starring David Harbour. There’s still no word on an official release date for the new trailer, but in the meantime I have something that might just do the trick.

In the video above, you can watch me painstakingly recap the new Hellboy trailer with a little lot of editing help to bring my words to life. But if you can’t watch a video right now, or you’re just hungry for additional info, read on for an even more detailed breakdown of everything the official trailer revealed.

The Hellboy trailer opens in a dark cavern. We watch two people walk through the scene as another voice, almost definitely Hellboy’s adopted father Trevor Bruttenholm (played by Ian McShane) drops hints that “something was coming” before mentioning a “forever war.”

Next, we cut to an unidentified city building surrounded by anxious police. Hellboy pulls up in a car and one of the cops accidentally shoots at him. Our anti-hero responds angrily, shouting “I’m on your side!” It’s also at this point the trailer really kicks into high-gear as Billy Idol’s “Mony Mony” plays in the background.

We get a few shots of what seems to be the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense headquarters. The BPRD is the occult-focused government organization Hellboy works for, and this trailer suggests we might see a few more of his supernatural allies when the movie comes out in 2019.

For now, however, the only other heroes we meet are Alice Monaghan (played by Sasha Lane), a woman who was kidnapped by fairies as a child and ages slowly as a result, along with Ben Daimio (Daniel Dae Kim), an undead U.S. marine who transforms into a werejaguar under intense stress.

Our trio arrives at a London shop looking for a secret entrance. An older woman asks Hellboy for ID and the big red half-demon replies, “Are… are you serious?”

At this point, we get less plot and a lot more action. That includes some voiceovers from Hellboy’s adopted father. We also see Hellboy pick up his iconic oversized hand cannon, which he uses to literally blow some poor bad guy’s brains out. The Right Hand of Doom (a stone appendage that was attached by Hellboy’s biological father, the demon Azzael, after he hacked off baby Hellboy’s actual forearm) gets a shoutout too. “It smashes things real good.”

Finally, we get a look at the movie’s big bad, Nimue the Blood Queen (played by Milla Jovovich). In Hellboy lore, Nimue is the Lady of the Lake from the era of King Arthur. After imprisoning Merlin the wizard she was driven mad by her own magic abilities, turned completely evil, and was dismembered by her fellow witches. In Hellboy: The Wild Hunt (which this new movie is based on) she returns, gets revenge on the witches, and attempts to raise an army. It’s unclear how closely the film will follow that story, but according to Jovovich, who joined the NYCC panel via video recording, “she’s trying to kill everything and everyone around her.”

In the trailer, Hellboy interrupts the Blood Queen in the middle of some unholy ritual, casually quipping, “Did I interrupt?”

“No,” she replies, “you’re right on time.”

A moment later we see Hellboy again as he pulls himself out of what looks like a well. His horns, typically shaved down, have grown to full length. He’s wielding a giant flaming sword and a crown of fire hovers over his head. He’s gone full demonic, and that means the end of the world may be close at hand.

Hellboy goes full demon.

Unfortunately, that’s where the trailer ends. We’ll have to wait until next year to find out what happens next.

Hellboy will be released on April 12, 2019.
