'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina' Netflix Trailer Looks Surprisingly Funny

But we want more of the black cat.

If you were worried that Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was just a darker, grittier Sabrina the Teenage Witch, the first full trailer should put those fears to rest in the cold dead ground.

Our latest look at the upcoming Sabrina adaptation proves the new series can magically balance the terrifying with the totally hilarious. This show has scares aplenty, but it also looks adorable and charming.

Netflix released the first full trailer for Chilling Adventures of Sabrina on Wednesday, and it makes Sabrina look like just another fun teenager — until she’s forced to reconcile her dual identity as a half-human, half-witch on her 16th birthday. Sabrina explains in the trailer that when she turns 16, she has to choose between “the witch world of her family or the human world of her friends.” But when prompted to sign her name in blood to become an official Bride of Satan, she abstains, deciding to straddle the line between light and dark.

So she’ll be a cool high-schooler and also fight demons and rival witches.

This new Sabrina is bold, defiant, and has an undeniable charm.

On some level, the plot seems somewhat predictable, but there’s no denying that hearing her shout the following while covered in blood is a pretty awesome moment: “My name is Sabrina Spellman, and I will not sign it away!”

The show’s official description characterizes it “as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft.” Some of the most fun comedic moments in the trailer come from Sabrina’s aunts, Hilda (Lucy Davis) and Zelda Spellman (Miranda Otto). In the end, Zelda kills and buries Hilda for being annoying. #relatable.

Michelle Gomez as Sabrina’s favorite teacher, Mary Wardell, is also a welcome delight, especially after she’s possessed by the Devil’s handmaiden and tries to turn Sabrina evil.

“Girls, girls, let’s not be catty bitches,” she says in the trailer, just before we get a perfectly timed shot of Sabrina’s black cat Salem hissing.

Things are looking totally chilling and awesome so far, but let’s see more of Salem already. Will the cat talk or what?

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will be released on Netflix October 26, 2018.
