'Into the Spider-Verse' Easter Egg Teases a Crossover With the PS4 Game

by Corey Plante

The latest trailer for Into the Spider-Verse does an impressive job of weaving various iterations of cinematic Spider-Man into Sony’s new animated movie, but there’s one addition you might have missed. It looks like the Peter Parker from Insomniac’s Spider-Man video game might make an appearance — at least in the form of a subtle Easter egg reference.

At about the 1:33 mark in the trailer, Peter Parker’s Advanced Suit from the new PS4 game can be seen with its distinct white spider emblem. You have to look closely, though, since it’s hidden in the background Peter Parker and an older woman that’s probably Aunt May.

This particular lair seems like some kind of Spider-Cave dedicated to all the Spider-People gathered from across the Spider-Verse. The Advanced Suit is in a glass case alongside recognizable Spidey suits, and it makes us wonder exactly how big this version of the Spider-Verse gets.

Bill Rosemann, the executive creative director at Marvel Games responsible for making the Spider-Man PS4 game happen, even coyly noted the Easter egg on Twitter, confirming that it’s not just an animation goof.

Does this mean the Peter Parker from Spider-Man for PS4 might appear in the new movie? We sure hope so.

Yuri Lowenthal voices Peter Parker in the video game, and it’s totally possible that he might reprise the role for at least a cameo in Into the Spider-Verse. In the game, Peter’s mentor Dr. Otto Octavius assists him in designing the new suit, and it’s the default suit used by Spidey for most of the story.

Peter Parker gets an email from Dr. Octavius about his new suit designs.

“Spider-Verse” originated as a 2014 Marvel Comics storyline that united a myriad of alt-Earth Spider-Men and -Women to fight a common enemy. Into the Spider-Verse explores a similar concept after a particle collider loosens the barrier between worlds, allowing various alternate reality versions of Spider-Man to converge in Miles Morales’ universe.

Morales is the main protagonist, but joining him is at least one version of Peter Parker, along with Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Gwen, Peni Parker’s Spider-Slayer, and even Spider-Ham. Based on this Easter egg, it looks like there could be even more.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse swings into theaters on December 14, 2018.
