'AHS' Season 8 Spoilers: One Coven Member Might Not Be a Witch at All
She may be something else entirely
by Josie Rhodes CookJust when you think all the questions have been answered in American Horror Story Season 8, another mystery pops up to keep us guessing. Going into Episode 3 of AHS: Apocalypse, fans were curious whether the witches from Coven would finally return, and return they did near the end of the episode. But this may have inspired more questions.
When Cordelia first showed up at the containment facility with two other Coven witches, she told Madison Montgomery and Myrtle Snow to “Find our sisters” (who turned out to be Coco, Mallory, and Dinah). Later, when she resurrects them, Madison seems to recognize Mallory, even saying her signature catchphrase: “Surprise bitch. I bet you thought you’d seen the last of me.”
Based on fan reactions to the episode, it’s safe to say most viewers thought Cordelia meant their “sisters” were fellow witches. But what if Mallory isn’t a witch at all?
Is Mallory an angel?
The most popular fan theory seems to be that Mallory is actually an angel. The way she reacted to Michael Langdon, the Antichrist on Apocalypse, and the fact that he was knocked back by her power and seemed unsure of what he was dealing with when confronted with her anger, suggests that she’s certainly something very powerful indeed.
In Season 8 Episode 3 of American Horror Story, Mallory tells Michael she feels there’s something inside her, trying to claw its way out. Some fans think this means Mallory isn’t actually an angel, but she is possessed by one.
“Maybe Michael (the angel) is a separate entity that is inhabiting Mallory,” Redditor how_veryy suggested. “So the body of Mallory is a witch (which is why Cordelia views her as a sister) but also why she has the ‘there’s someone inside me’ thing because Coco’s guardian angel Michael is possessing her similar to the Mary Eunice devil thing.”
Also on Reddit, frostfruit wrote that Mallory could be a seraph, another form of angel.
What else could Mallory be?
Other fans had similar theories about what Mallory might be if she’s not simply another witch on American Horror Story. SlimeyCitrus on Reddit suggested that she’s a nephilim, a half angel-half human hybrid. Another Redditor replied saying she could be half angel and Cordelia’s daughter through an advanced aging quick similar to Michael.
There are other theories on Twitter and elsewhere suggesting Mallory isn’t an angel at all. Instead, she could be possessed by a former Coven witch or even a reincarnation of one. That theory relies on Coco and Dinah also suffering the same fate, but so far only Mallory said something feels “wrong” inside her.
Whatever Mallory turns out to be, this is already shaping up to be a very interesting crossover season of American Horror Story that has fans talking on every corner of the web. We’ll have to wait until later this week (or even longer) to see how AHS Season 8 explains this mystery.
American Horror Story airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. on FX.
