'Spider-Man' PS4 Easter Egg References the Dumbest Scene in Spidey History
Once you see it, you can't unsee it.
Marvel’s Spider-Man for PS4 is chock full of Easter Eggs referencing the most iconic moments from the comic books, movies, and various Spidey TV shows. But it turns out that the new game from Insomniac also draws some inspiration from one of the silliest scenes in Spider-Man history.
If you guessed that we’re talking about Peter Parker’s infamous emo phase in Spider-Man 3 you’d be right. In the Sam Raimi-directed film, Toby Maguire’s Spider-Man merges with the symbiote that will later become Venom, giving him a boost of confidence that translates into one particularly cringe-worthy scene.
In Spider-Man for PS4, Peter Parker doesn’t need to merge with another sort of alien life form to bust out some finger guns. Instead, all you have to do is press the Square button the controller while walking by another person on the street. In response, Spidey will shoot them a finger gun, offer a high-five, or one of several other interactions.
Here’s what it looks like in action:
Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like you’ll be able to bust out any other Toby Maguire-inspired dance moves in the new Spider-Man PS4 video game, at least not that we’re aware of. Then again, at least when this version of the superhero points his fingers at random people on the street they don’t recoil in disgust.
Beyond this not-so-subtle Spider-Man 3 Easter Egg, the new game also features plenty of other references to Spider-Man history. In the game’s first scene we see a copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 (the comic that first introduced the world to the web-slinger) in Peter Parker’s apartment, and in the game’s first mission you lift some fallen debris to save a group of civilians in an image lifted almost directly from Amazing Spider-Man #33.
