This Will Ferrell Baseball Mini Doc "Ferrell On The Field" Already Looks Insufferable

Watch the new trailer for Ferrell's baseball mini-doc.

In March, during Major League spring training, Will Ferrell made some headlines by shuttling himself all over the Cactus League in order to play all nine defensive positions with nine different teams. This kind of low-impact stunt is common during Spring Training — one year I saw Garth Brooks suit up for a Kansas City Royals’ spring training game — and though I found it kind of annoying, I soon forgot about it.

Unfortunately, HBO has made the decision to make this story into a mini-doc that will air almost six months after his busy day in Arizona. Here’s the trailer, which was released today. SPOILER ALERT: Hijinks!

It’s called Ferrell Takes The Field, and it strikes me as a rather lazy send-up of a George Plimpton novel crossed with a Veeckian Minor League promotion. (The stunt’s proceeds did benefit charity; it’s unclear whether the HBO deal did, also). It will air September 12 on HBO — it would appear HBO has no kind of feel for these things.

Except for Ballers.
