Comic-Con Debuts Marvel Rising: Initiation Trailer Focusing on Girl Heroes
by Oscar GonzalezDisney appears to be taking full advantage of its Marvel licenses on both the big and small screen. While there were no Marvel films panels at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, there was an event featuring a new team-up focusing on the three fan-favorite superheroes, who happen to all be women.
Marvel Rising: Initiation is a new animated series for Disney XD starring Dove Cameron (Descendants, Agents of SHIELD) as Ghost Spider/Gwen Stacy, Kathleen Khavari (Insecure, Avengers Assemble) as Ms. Marvel, and Milana Vayntrub (This Is Us, Dallas & Robo) as Squirrel Girl. Chloe Bennet will reprise her Agents of SHIELD character, Quake, in the series and Kamil McFadden will be the sole dude providing the voice of The Patriot. A panel for the show at the San Diego Comic-Con on Friday gave those in attendance an early view of the show.
The new Disney animated series has Ms. Marvel and Squirrel teaming up to find Ghost Spider — formerly known as Spider-Gwen — who they believe is responsible for their friends’ death. Gwen is happy to take them on as well when she’s not playing drums for her garage rock band.
Marvel Rising: Initiation will act as a prequel to Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors, which was first announced last December. Secret Warriors is a feature-length film for Disney XD that is set to debut later in 2018 and will include the previously mentioned superheroes along with Inferno, America Chavez, Exile, and Ms. Marvel.
Premiering on August 13, Marvel Rising: Initiation will consist of six four-minute long shorts airing on Disney XD, which will tie into Secret Warriors.
Even without the Marvel Cinematic Universe panels at Comic-Con, there was still plenty of Marvel TV shows to go around. One surprise was the trailer for the second season of Iron Fist, which people appeared to enjoy, something that can’t be said for the first season of the show.
