'Rick and Morty' Video Reveals Mr. Poopybutthole's True Feelings on Beth
It's also charming as hell.
by Corey PlanteThe fan-favorite Mr. Poopybutthole has long been the harbinger of Rick and Morty news ever since he popped up at the end of “The Wedding Squanchers” to tease Season 3, but these days, he’s just sitting around playing the accordion. It’s totally charming.
The official Rick and Morty Twitter account tweeted out a seemingly new video on Wednesday featuring Mr. Poopybutthole. He sits atop a boulder in the wilderness at sunset and plays a wistful, pleasant song on his accordion. The caption reads “Remember the happier times.” As Mr. Poopybutthole smiles, he thinks of Beth, Morty, Rick, and Summer via thought bubble.
Jerry’s head also tries to slide into the bubble as well, which probably means Jerry bugs Mr. P just as much as he bugs everyone else. But that hardly matters when you’re Mr. Poopybutthole, the nicest guy in the multiverse. Unlike the violent chaos that consumes so much of Rick and Morty, this is a fun, easygoing video that’ll make fans of the character smile.
We shouldn’t necessarily take this video as “canon” per se, but it’s still nice to know that Mr. Poopybutthole remembers the Smith family fondly, even after Beth shot him multiple times and almost killed him at the end of “Total Rickall.” He really is the nicest guy ever if it is indeed the case that he’s forgiven Beth. She is, after all, the first face he thinks of.
The animation style on this is slightly more cartoonish than typical episodes of the show. Much like the Rick and Morty claymation horror shorts by Lee Hardcastle, this particular video serves mostly as a station identification, which are brief commercials meant to remind viewers what network they’re watching. Adult Swim is particularly fond of using these “idents” and using characters from its various shows in the process.
The last time we heard from Mr. Poopybutthole was a heartfelt summary of the relationship he has with his wife in “The Poop in My Pant”, which was released just before Thanksgiving in 2017.
Who knew that Mr. Poopybutthole had so much musical talent? Here’s to hoping we get more from him when Adult Swim starts releasing those 70 more episodes that were ordered. If anybody shows up to announce when it’ll happen, it’ll be Mr. Poopybutthole.
