Gmail Outage Map Shows Massive Blackouts Affecting New York, LA, and SF

If you tried to check your Gmail Monday afternoon and saw that sad broken robot along with a 502 error, you’re not alone. According to DownDetector.com, Gmail is experiencing significant interruptions in major metropolitan areas across the US, including New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.
The outage caused widespread panic in offices across the country.
Despite the Twitter dismay, Gmail has yet to acknowledge the outage, telling one user on Twitter that “there are no widespread issues with Gmail.” On Google’s G-Suite dashboard, no issues have been reported by the company. Inverse has reached out to Google for comment and will update this post with their response.
While that panicky feeling you’re experiencing might be the worst its every felt, Gmail is no stranger to outages.
In 2009, a large outage was caused by new code issued by Google meant to geographically reorganize user data. In 2013, two separate Gmail networks simultaneously failed, causing 10 hours of delays. In 2014, a large outage was experienced after a bug reportedly “caused users’ requests for their data to be ignored.” In September 2017, a partial [http://www.businessinsider.com/google-gmail-and-calendar-service-disruption-2017-9) outage hit Gmail and Google Calendar.
