June 30 is a big day for Tesla. It’s the date CEO Elon Musk gave for when the electric carmaker will reach its goal of producing 5,000 Model 3s in a week. A new post on his Instagram gives the hint that the company will make the goal and do a little gloating when it does.
Musk posted on Instagram Thursday an image of a Model 3 getting a paint job, but it’s not a typical color for the affordable electric car. The colors available for the Tesla Model 3 are black, silver, midnight silver metallic, red, blue, and pearl white. What’s not on the list is gold, like the one in the picture. It appears Musk is preparing to celebrate a big event with a special car, or the paint job is a celebration of his birthday, which is June 28.
The $35,000 electric car was a big step for Tesla when it was announced, but months of trying to solve problems with the line have taken a toll on Musk and the company.
In the last shareholder meeting in early June, individuals shared their concerns over the leadership of the CEO and board members. Stockholders did ultimately vote to keep Musk as head of the company. The Model 3 production goal is 5,000 per week, and thanks to a giant tent outside of the Tesla Factory at Fremont, Calif., the goal has been met or close to it causing Musk to send a company email Wednesday saying how there would be a “rude awakening.”
Tesla will reveal whether it met its goal of 5,000 Model 3s in a week, or not, sometime in the first few days of July although it’s likely Musk will let the cat out of the bag sooner.
On Sunday, one Tesla employee got a bit happy and tweeted how the company reached its goal of making 5,000 Model 3 batteries within a week. This uptick in battery production may be the reason why Panasonic, who supplies Tesla battery cells, says it’s experiencing a shortage.
