'Incredibles 2' Ending Sets Up 'Incredibles 3,' But Don't Hold Your Breath
It took 14 years for the Incredibles to come back with a sequel and do battle with the Underminer, continuing the ending of the first film, but because fans are always looking for the next thing, one can’t help but wonder if there will be an Incredibles 3. Does the ending of this movie set up another sequel? Well, yes, in the same way that the first one set up Incredibles 2, but there’s no confirmation that Pixar plans to have the Parr family suit up a third time.
This post contains mild Incredibles 2 spoilers.
The first movie ended with Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl, Violet, and Dash putting on their domino masks as they prepared to battle the Underminer. It’s not a true cliffhanger so much as it’s a tease — the Incredibles adventures are not over, though in 2004, there wasn’t any indication that audiences would ever see more of them. Incredibles 2 picks up exactly at that moment, though, and the film begins with a thrilling fight with the supervillain.
By the end of Incredibles 2, all appears to be well. Supers are legal once again, the Parr family is all together, and Violet has a date! However, when gun-wielding crooks speed down the street, the whole family knows its time to heed the call. They put on their masks in almost the exact same way, scored to the soaring Incredibles theme once again, and the movie ends.
It’s not specifically setting up a third movie, but the open-ended nature of the conclusion certainly leaves the door open. Plus, the first movie ended the same way, and it got a sequel.
Will there be an Incredibles 3, though? It’s too soon to tell.
“The worst time to talk about babies is when a mother’s just delivered,” Incredibles director Brad Bird told Bustle in April. “Right now it’s like asking a person who’s just ate a large, living room-size hamburger what they want for lunch. It’s not a good time to talk about it.”
Pixar used to be much more hesitant to make sequels, as for a while, Toy Story 2 was the only one the studio released. Cars 2, Cars 3, Monsters University, Toy Story 3, and Finding Dory are evidence that things have changed. Bird actually was interested in making an Incredibles sequel shortly after the first movie came out, but he worked on other projects for a decade and a half instead.
Given how popular superhero franchises are nowadays, and given that Bird expressed interest in making more Incredibles in the past, it’s not crazy to suspect that Pixar might make another one. However, that’s far from confirmation. Incredibles 3 could happen — the new movie ends in a way that makes another story a possibility — but for now, there’s no official word. Y’all can chill and enjoy this film.
Incredibles 2 is now in theaters.
