Matt Groening's 'Disenchantment' Is Like 'Futurama' Meets 'Adventure Time'
This fantasy story is full of personal demons and "human fools."
by Corey PlanteThere’s a new animated series from Simpsons creator Matt Groening coming to Netflix, and it looks like somebody fused Adventure Time together with Futurama in the best way possible. Titled Disenchantment, the series follows an alcoholic princess named Bean — voiced by Broad City’s Abbi Jacobson — and her misadventures with a feisty elf named Elfo (Nat Faxon) and her “personal demon” Luci (Eric Andre).
The first tease for the show hit Twitter with badly cropped images for the main characters on Tuesday, but Netflix offered the first four official images on Wednesday. The animation style looks remarkably similar to all of Groening’s other work, including all the overbites and a strange number of fingers for its characters. This is the first new show from Groening in almost 20 years and his first foray into the realm of fantasy. Considering how excellent Futurama was for its sci-fi comedy, then chances are pretty high that Groening can work the same magic in this fantastical world, which has a mature magical fantasy vibe not unlike Adventure Time.
The four teaser images show the three main characters together in various circumstances with either different weapons or methods of alcohol consumption. The series has been in the works since at least early 2016. “Disenchantment will be about life and death, love and sex, and how to keep laughing in a world full of suffering and idiots, despite what the elders and wizards and other jerks tell you,” Groening told Deadline in July 2017. According to that same original article, the story takes place in “the crumbling medieval kingdom of Dreamland.” The three core characters will encounter “ogres, sprites, harpies, imps, trolls, walruses, and lots of human fools.” So it sounds like Disenchantment will be fantastical-AF.
The three excellent lead voice actors Abbi Jacobson, Nat Faxon, and Eric Andre already come from a strong comedic background and seem perfectly suited to their respective roles. They’ll be joined by many of the voice actors from Futurama as well, who’ll probably voice some of those aforementioned “human fools.”
The first ten episodes of Disenchantment will be available to stream on Netflix August 17. But considering Netflix originally ordered 20 episodes, it’s possible we’ll get another ten at some point in the future.
And who knows, maybe we’ll get cameos with characters from Simpsons, Futurama, or even Adventure Time? Stranger things have happened.
