I don’t feel so good… That’s my response to the official plot synopsis of the still-untitled Avengers 4, which was quietly released just a few weeks after the release of Avengers: Infinity War. And, if the ending of Infinity War wasn’t bad enough, the synopsis for Avengers 4 is teasing even more “sacrifices” for the good universe. Can’t these poor rich superheroes catch a break?
In the newest issue of License Global, a magazine for the licensing and consumer products industry, the plot synopsis for “Marvel’s Avengers: Untitled” was unveiled within the magazine’s preview of upcoming movies for the next year. The magazine further confirms the film’s release date as May 3, 2019, so don’t expect another surprise bump out of nowhere.
The synopsis reads as follows:
A culmination of 22 interconnected films, the fourth installment of the Avengers saga will draw audiences to witness the turning point of this epic journey. Our beloved heroes will truly understand how fragile this reality is and the sacrifices that must be made to uphold it.
That sounds… dark. It’s even darker than Infinity War, in which Marvel fans witnessed the deaths of fan-favorites like (spoilers!) Loki, and the disintegration of Black Panther, Doctor Strange, pretty much all of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and Spider-Man (omg) from existence.
But with the infinite power of the Infinity Stones, it’s likely that all those characters will come back — they have sequels to make, after all. But as some of the Old Guard approach the end of their contracts, such as Chris Evans and Robert Downey, Jr., there may be some real goodbyes in store.
In Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos succeeded in his mission to use the Infinity Stones to bring “balance” to the universe by wiping out literally half of it. The film was loosely based on the 1991 storyline The Infinity Gauntlet by Jim Starlin, which had characters absent from the film like Wolverine, Silver Surfer, and Cloak, who will debut this summer in the Marvel TV series Cloak & Dagger. But the film did tease the arrival of one more major character: Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel. Her movie will arrive before Avengers 4, on March 6, 2019.
Avengers: Infinity War is in theaters now. Avengers 4 will be released next year, on May 3, 2019.
