'Avengers: Infinity War': 6 Trailer Scenes Not in the Actual Movie
Two theatrical trailers and a Super Bowl spot gave us glimpses we ultimately never saw.
by Eric FranciscoA moment of silence for our fallen heroes. Avengers: Infinity War was the culmination of a ten-year saga that began in 2008’s Iron Man, and the event film did not disappoint in letting fans know nothing will be the same again. But the final movie may have looked a little different from the approximately 500 times each of us watched the trailers.
While it’s very common for movie trailers, especially trailers to blockbuster movies, to include footage not in the final cut, it’s still interesting how movies upend expectations. Scenes that fans have studied for months veer to the left when we long expected a turn to the right right. And in the case of Infinity War, a few major elements from the trailer are excised from the film outright.
Here are all the moments from the Infinity War trailers that fans did not see in the final cut of the movie. (Fingers crossed they’re immortalized in the Blu-ray.)
6. “Fun isn’t something one considers when balancing the universe…”
Thanos’s killer line about enjoying the work he’s doing was a popular quote fans recited for months. It was even the caption to this photo of mine on Instagram. But the line was never spoken by actor Josh Brolin in the film. Considering how Thanos was portrayed in Infinity War, it actually would have been way out of character. The Thanos who ended up in theaters was a lot more muted, maybe even remorseful than the trailer makes him out to be.
5. “Who the hell are you guys?”
Thor meeting the Guardians of the Galaxy and having a bro-off with Star-Lord was easily one of the funniest moments in the film. But in the trailers, the Guardians are a lot cooler than they act in the final cut of the movie, ready to attack the God of Thunder when Mantis gives him a rude awakening.
4. The Forging of Stormbreaker
Thor’s mission to create a new weapon to fight Thanos — with the help of Peter Dinklage, no less — leads to him getting burned by the power of a dying star. Thankfully, Stormbreaker is powerful enough to revive Thor. But in the trailer, the creation of Stormbreaker was way different, with a gloriously caped Thor using his own powers to charge his weapon.
3. Banner and Natasha’s Reunion
When Banner and Natasha, a.k.a. the Hulk and Black Widow, became an item in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, fans didn’t know what to make of it. Three years later, the pairing still hasn’t found a huge audience the likes that Cap/Bucky enjoy on Twitter. But Infinity War’s trailers promised some kind of closure or follow-up to their relationship. But it seems even Infinity War didn’t have time to deal with this, even at two hours and 40 minutes.
2. Cap’s Vambrace Shields
When T’Challa ordered to get “that man a shield,” they did just that. But the scene where Captain America busts them out like a BAMF in the Super Bowl commercial was unfortunately cut for who knows why.
1. The Shot
You know which one I’m talking about: the shot, the one that closed off the first trailer and promptly made every Marvel fan’s head explode. The one that seemed destined to top off the other famous shot from 2012’s The Avengers. For whatever reason, Cap leading Earth’s mightiest heroes was removed from the final cut, which is probably the most heartbreaking loss second to Spider-Man.
Avengers: Infinity War is in theaters now.
