'Star Trek: Discovery' Season 2 Trailer Reveals TOS Enterprise Uniforms

by Ryan Britt

The canon of the original Star Trek will be 100 percent honored in the second season of Star Trek: Discovery. A new behind-the-scenes trailer reveals new designs for the classic color-coded uniforms seen in the original series.

On Thursday, CBS released a new behind-the-scenes trailer commemorating the fact that Discovery is in production for its second season. The footage mostly shows sets under construction as well as writer/director Alex Kurtzman calling “action.” All the footage is peppered with sound clips from the original Star Trek, most notably a quote from Captain Pike in “The Cage” where he says, “I’m tired of being responsible for 203 lives.” Other quotes from Spock talking about his Vulcan heritage are interwoven with contemporary quotes from Michael Burnham about needing to forge her own path.

And most tellingly, for hardcore fans, the trailer totally confirms that we will, in fact, see the famous color-coded original series uniforms. Production sketches and a few glimpses of actual cast members confirm that the gold and red classic Star Trek uniforms are back. Previously, the tie-in novel Desperate Measures explained that these types of uniforms were only being used on Constitution Class Starships, which means they would be worn on the USS Enterprise, but not on other ships of a different class. Right now, it looks like Discovery might go with that explanation, as it looks like one shot clearly shows the back of Aston Mount as Captain Christopher Pike.

Is this Captain Pike?

Right now, it’s unclear if an adult version of Spock would be featured in the new season, though flashbacks with a young Spock have been confirmed. The new behind-the-scenes trailer also clearly shows Burnham walking through a door marked “1701,” meaning she will find herself onboard the Enterprise and maybe, face-to-face with her stepbrother Spock.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 does not yet have a release date.
