Why the 'Avengers: Infinity War' Post-Credits Scene Is Very Stressful

by Ryan Britt

In 2008, Marvel started a tradition that became an epidemic. After the credits rolled on Iron Man, there was one more scene. Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) emerged from the shadows slow-clapping and boasting about “the Avengers initiative.” Marvel Studios didn’t invent the post-credits scene trick, but they certainly perfected it. Ten years and countless post-credits teases later, Avengers: Infinity War gets back to basics. Yes, there is a post-credits scene after this mega-long superhero flick, but you’ll have to sit tight for a bit.

There are no specific spoilers ahead for Avengers: Infinity War or its post-credits scene. What you will read below just tells you about how long to wait for such a scene and why, emotionally, you should.

If you get to the end of Infinity War and you’re left wanting a little bit more, that is understandable. The film is a punishing, emotional ride. But, the most stressful part of the movie doesn’t have anything to do with what happens during the actual story. Instead, it’s the painful waiting time through the actual credits that will be the hardest. Trust me on this one. After the ending of Infinity War, you will likely want to get up and leave — partially because you need to go to the restroom but also because you need to start talking about the movie right away.

Nick Fury started all of this 10 years ago!

But sit tight, because if you miss the post-credits scene of Infinity War you will be super sorry. It’s a subtle, small moment, but it’s unexpected as hell. Just when you think there’s not going to be a post-credits scene, it suddenly happens. And you will be soooo happy when it does.

Stick around for this one. After a plethora of post-credits scenes that have amounted to giant jokes or confusing teases, this one really matters, and in many ways, it reminds us of why Marvel started doing this in the first place.

Avengers: Infinity War is out on Friday, April 27.
