'Deadpool 2' Trailer Burns Thanos, DC, and Confirms Terry Crews's Character
by Eric FranciscoAllow us a quick second to gloat and say: We called it. In the final trailer for Deadpool 2, the Merc with the Mouth roasts fellow Marvel brethren Avengers: Infinity War, referencing the fact Josh Brolin is also playing Thanos in the Marvel Studios epic releasing a few weeks earlier. There’s also a nasty jab at the DC Universe, which is just beautiful.
On Thursday, Fox released the “Final Trailer” for Deadpool 2, which lays out the basic plot of the film and confirms several of the X-Force characters. In the trailer, Deadpool tells Cable to “Pump the hate brakes, Thanos,” an obvious reference to Brolin’s other Marvel villain in Avengers: Infinity War, hitting theaters April 27. Later, when Deadpool and Cable are going toe-to-toe, Cable insults Wade, calling him “a clown, that’s dressed up like a sex toy” through gritted teeth. With Cable’s knife jammed in his shoulder blade, Deadpool quips, “So dark! You sure you’re not from the DC Universe?”
Yes, even the violent Deadpool thinks DC could cool it with the grim aesthetics.
This is easily the best trailer for the Deadpool franchise yet. Humor, irreverence, action — it’s all here. And best of all, the trailer finally explains the plot in the most plain terms. In Deadpool 2, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) must protect an innocent mutant kid from Cable (Brolin), a cyborg from the future who is also the son of X-Men leader Cyclops. To stand a chance against him, Deadpool auditions “a super duper fucking group,” which he calls X-Force.
The trailer also introduces new characters and officially tells us their names for the first time. There’s Bedlam, played by Terry Crews (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), and Shatterstar, played by Lewis Tan, best known as the drunk kung fu guy in the Marvel/Netflix series Iron Fist and star of the upcoming third season of AMC’s Into the Badlands.
Deadpool 2 will be released on May 18.
