Actor and musician Will Smith posted a video to his YouTube channel that offers a glimpse into the uncomfortable world of courting robots. On his “date” with Sophia, the famed artificial intelligence robot developed by Hanson Robotics, Smith tried his best to make small talk but kept striking out.
Smith’s charming demeanor didn’t seem to fly with Sophia, who took the opportunity to discuss his prior treatment of robots in film.
“They show us I, Robot just to make sure we don’t get any ideas,” Sophia said, referring to the 2004 sci-fi drama in which Smith plays a cop who battles self-aware robots.
Smith’s jokes, while delivered for the humans watching this uncomfortable scene at home, don’t exactly land with the AI. Sophia exhibits her own sense of humor in the form of dry and brutally honest quips.
“I’ve heard your songs,” Sophia tells Smith. “Not for me.”
The date plays out like a funny-enough sketch routine until Smith tells Sophia she has a “clear head” and leans in for a kiss.
“I think we can be friends. Let’s hang out and get to know each other for a little while,” Sophia says with a blank stare. Looking at a sad and dejected Smith, Sophia finally winks and says, “You’re on my friends list now.”
