The next movie in the main Star Wars series is going to be about war, but, like, even more so than usual. According to John Boyega, who played Finn in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, the upcoming Episode IX is going to “be all-out war.”
Boyega, who was speaking on a conference call on Thursday night ahead of next week’s Awesome Con in Washington DC, teased the plot of the third and final Star Wars in the new trilogy, according to Star Wars News, though he admittedly hasn’t read the script yet.
“Next for me, filming-wise, is Star Wars: Episode IX in July, and they’ve officially given us a note to start training soon,” Boyega said. “I’m going to take a holiday before that, because I think Episode IX you know, regardless of where the story goes, and I haven’t read it by the way, is going to be all out war so I know that I’m going to have to do all I can and train for that.”
It’s not the first time that Boyega has said he expects Episode IX to be an epic conflict. “I don’t know nothing about the script, the story. I don’t know where Finn’s going, I don’t know where Rey is going, but definitely I feel this is the war to end all wars in this movie,” he said at New York Comic Con back in October.
It makes sense, given where The Last Jedi left of. The first two movies in the new trilogy were about a band of resistance fighters trying to defeat a looming threat that the rest of the galaxy didn’t acknowledge. The First Order almost wiped them out in Last Jedi, but Leia, Poe, and the gang were able to send of a distress call in the end, and the film ends with the promise that the rest of their allies will join the fight. Episode IX won’t be about a small, scrappy bunch of underdogs anymore. It’s going to be two sides fighting on an equal playing field.
Should be fun, but then again, that’s what we all thought about the Clone Wars.
Star Wars: Episode IX is set for a December 20, 2019 release date.
