'Cloak and Dagger' Trailer Easter Egg Has Big MCU Connection

by Eric Francisco

All eyes are on Avengers: Infinity War. But in the newest trailer for Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger, released Tuesday, a fictional oil company seen in the original Iron Man is the center of attention, as the shady conglomerate is responsible creating the MCU’s newest and youngest heroes.

In the newest trailer for Cloak & Dagger, airing June 7 on Freeform, a disembodied voice talks about “the divine pairing”: Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph), two teens from New Orleans, a city “of destruction and rebirth,” who discover powers that uniquely compliment each other’s. As the voice explains, “It always came down to two people.”

The first shots of the trailer feature oil rigs, toxic waters, and the event that gave Tyrone and Tandy their powers. And it all goes back to Roxxon Corp, a conglomerate first seen in the background of 2008’s Iron Man.

Since Iron Man, Roxxon has also been seen in 2010’s Iron Man 2 (as a sponsor of a Formula One car), the Marvel/Netflix shows Daredevil and Iron Fist, and as gas stations in the ABC series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Now, Roxxon will play a much bigger role as the responsible party for changing Tandy and Tyrone, who use their powers to become the superheroes Cloak and Dagger.

True to their names, Cloak is capable of teleportation through the “Darkforce dimension,” while Dagger can generate hard crystals out of pure light.

The trailer reuses a shot of Tyrone — wearing his big signature cape — on a building with a Roxxon sign somewhere in New Orleans.

While neither Cloak nor Dagger will appear in Infinity War — which is a shame, since both their powers could be useful against Thanos and his Infinity Stones — the show’s firm place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe means there will at least be some ripple effects as the MCU enters a bold new era.

Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger will premiere June 7 on Freeform.
