'Deadpool 2' Trailer Might’ve Sneakily Introduced a New X-Men Team

The newest trailer for Deadpool 2 introduced a squad of superpowered mutants seemingly led by the Merc with a Mouth, and it includes a few surprising new faces that make them seem way more badass than the X-Men.

On Wednesday morning, 20th Century Fox released a brand-new full trailer for Deadpool 2. The short includes a strange sequence in which Deadpool plays with a Deadpool-Woody toy and a Cable toy, putting them in compromising sexual positions., but it also has tons of legitimate footage from the movie. We see Cable in action (finally), and a peek at more footage of Domino being badass. We also get an epic team-up shot that probably looks intentionally a lot like that bit from Justice League where they’re exiting the Batman’s Flying Fox plane. (We’d be willing to bet Deadpool will make some kind of comment about just that, especially considering he already made fun of Mustachegate in the trailer.)

Is this our first look at the X-Force, or something entirely different?

We see what looks like a badass five-person team. It’s tough to tell who the two characters are in the back, but Deadpool is front and center with Domino to his right and actor Terry Crews to his left in an unspecified role, yet another surprise. The group doesn’t seem to include Cable, Colossus, or Negasonic Teenage Warhead, each of which has a role in the film.

Crews’s character might just be G.W. Bridge, a member of shield with lots of combat and weapons experience but no powers. In most comics storylines, he sometimes has an adversarial relationship towards Cable and but also teams up with him in a group called Six Pack. He might also be Hammer, an obscure mutant who has also worked with Six Pack in the comics.

The character in the back, directly behind Crews, could be Shatterstar, who wields blades and can channel sonic frequencies through his weapons, among other things. The character is another Rob Liefeld creation, and he does appear to be wearing the same (dumb) headpiece that Shatterstar sports.

But all of this is just speculation at this point. See them line up in the full trailer for Deadpool 2 right around the 1:34 mark:

This could be a version of Six Pack, a merc group led by Cable. But the more likely explanation would have this be the beginnings of the X-Force.

Fox has been honest about their plans to develop an X-Force movie sometime after Deadpool 2, and this latest trailer makes it seem like it’ll do a lot of the heavy lifting in terms of bringing this team together.

At the very least, Deadpool 2 looks like it will build out this corner of the X-Men cinematic universe a lot more than the first movie, which included only a select few mutants.

Deadpool 2 will be released in theaters May 18, 2018.
