Cable, the gruff, cyborg Mutant from a dystopian future, made his dark and gritty debut in the new trailer for Deadpool 2, and at first, everything seems to serious that it feels like a totally different type of movie from the irreverant comedy of the first flick. Then, Ryan Reynolds breaks the fourth wall, makes fun of Justice League, and starts playing with dolls.
Yep, it’s a Deadpool movie, folks.
The trailer, which hit the web on Wednesday morning, begins with John Brolin giving a grave voiceover about pain that seems like it might be better suited to Logan than Deadpool. But, that’s the whole point, as Brolin is so self-serious that it can’t help but feel like a joke in context, especially when the Merc With a Mouth pauses the trailer to point out some missing visual effects on Cable’s cybernetic arm.
“It’s a metal arm! It’s not like we’re trying to remove a mustache!” Deadpool complains in a voiceover, spoofing Justice League’s questionable attempt to remove the mustache Superman actor Henry Cavil had grown for his role in Mission: Impossible - Fallout.
Deadpool decides to DIY it after that, and we’re treated to a scene were a Deadpool action figure, dressed like Woody from Toy Story throws down with a Cable figure. (Deadpool 2 sure shoots a lot of footage that’s presumably just going to be used in trailers, rather than the final movie, doesn’t it? That’s kinda neat.)
Eventually, the “real” footage resumes, and there’s action-packed shots of Cable, Deadpool, Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand), and Domino (Zazie Beetz), along with glimpses of old favorites like the Taxi driver Dopinder (Karan Soni), Deadpool’s bae Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), and Blind Al (Leslie Uggams). T.J. Miller is also there.
Deadpool 2 hits theaters on May 18.
