'Captain Marvel': Brie Larson Learns to Fly in New Photo

Major Carol Danvers was flying well before she became the superhero Captain Marvel. Brie Larson, who will play Captain Marvel in the MCU’s first female-led movie, shared a picture of her training for that part of the role on Tuesday.

In Marvel Comics, Captain Marvel was a pilot in the United States Air Force before gaining the power to fly on her own (along with super-strength and energy projection) when she was caught in the explosion of an alien Kree device. Fans haven’t seen any pictures of Larson, who won an Academy Award for Best Actress in 2015’s Room, in Captain Marvel’s superhero costume just yet, but this new picture should be a pretty good idea of what she might look like in the cockpit of a fighter jet.

“Learning how to fly,” Larson wrote.

The flight training — presumably on a simulator — is only part of Larson’s preparation for the role. She’s been reading Captain Marvel comics, obviously, but she’s also been meeting with real members of the U.S. Air Force, as seen in some Instagrams last week.

“Had the opportunity to have lunch with Brie Larson today!!” one member of the Air Force wrote on an Instagram post. “Going to show her around the F15 later for her upcoming movie Captain Marvel.”

Larson’s Captain Marvel isn’t expected to make an appearance in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War, even though she has been in Atlanta where Marvel Studios is filming reshoots. She could appear in Avengers 4, which recently wrapped principal photography just as production on Captain Marvel got off the ground. So, barring any unexpected cameos in upcoming Avengers movies, MCU fans aren’t going to see Larson as Captain Marvel in an official capacity for a while. Larson’s Twitter and Instagram photos will have to suffice.

Captain Marvel will hit theaters on March 9, 2019. Jeez, that’s a long time from now.
