'Get Out', 'Shape of Water' and Diversity Win Big in 2018 Oscar Nominations
Jordan Peele's film scoops up four nominations.
The Oscar nominations are out, and it’s a big year for diversity. Get Out scored four nominations, with Jordan Peele getting a nod for directing and Daniel Kaluuya getting recognized for his role as lead actor. Greta Gerwig and Guillermo del Toro also received nominations for their work, leading to a nominations list that looked a lot less white and male than previous years.
At the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, California, on Tuesday morning, Tiffany Haddish and Andy Serkis read out the nominees for the 90th Academy Awards, set to take place on March 4 with Jimmy Kimmel as host.
Among the other big winners were The Shape of Water, grabbing a stunning 13 nominations. John Williams’ work on Star Wars: The Last Jedi was also recognized, which if he wins would be the first time he’s won an Academy Award since 1993. The Disaster Artist and Logan both received a nod for best adapted screenplay.
The diversity of the nominee list was praised on Twitter:
However, the New York Times also noted on Tuesday that the academy membership remains 87 percent white and 72 percent male, despite an #OscarsSoWhite campaign that launched nearly three years ago.
