'Ocean's 8' Trailer Looks Good Enough to Avoid 'Ghostbusters' Backlash
'Ocean's 8' has all the charm and bravado of the previous films.
by Corey PlanteThe future of the Ocean’s heist franchise is all-female, and the new trailer for the upcoming Ocean’s 8 is a badass first look at the heist crew that’s going to rob a $150 million piece of jewelry right off Anne Hathaway’s neck.
The whole thing looks suave, chic, and charming in much the same way as the previous Ocean’s trilogy, but the new cast assembles a motley assortment of actresses, musicians, and comedians that makes for a lot of fun. Ocean’s 8 shouldn’t fall victim to same problems that caused the all-women Ghostbusters reboot to struggle: a difficult fan-base full of petulant man-babies who didn’t really want a drastic change in the formulaic model they felt undeserved ownership over.
As Ocean’s 8 trailer opens, Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock) is at her parole hearing, no doubt having spent a stretch of time in jail after getting caught for some kind of heist — it’s the same plot thread we saw her brother Danny (George Clooney) go through in his movies. Ever the pro at being a con, Debbie lies through her teeth and is able to get out of jail.
First on her to-do list after she’s free? Assemble a badass team of women for a high-profile heist at the annual Met Gala in New York City.
Much of the trailer is spent assembling the team and explaining the heist in question. Cate Blanchett’s Lou assumes the role of second, in much the same way Brad Pitt’s Rusty Ryan was to Danny.
“Why do you need to do this?” Lou asks over lunch.
“Because it’s what I’m good at,” Debbie responds with a knowing smirk.
Mindy Kaling’s Amita is seemingly a counterfeit jewelry-maker, Rihanna is a hacker that calls herself 9-Ball, Helena Bonham Carter’s Rose is some kind of designer or seamstress that will probably help with their costumes, Awkwafina’s Constance is a thief that’s adept at sleight of hand tricks, and Sarah Paulson’s Tammy is a mom that gets dragged back into the heist game by her old friends.
Their job is to rob the neck of Daphne Kluger (Anne Hathaway), specifically a necklace valued at “over $100 million.”
Because it’s Ocean’s, we get to see a ton of talented people do seemingly impossible things all with the backdrop of some elegant, flashy atmosphere. We might be used to a mostly male crew and Las Vegas, but these awesome women are ready to totally knock it out of the park at the Met Gala.
Ocean’s 8 will be released in theaters June 8, 2017.
