'Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom' Trailer: Is Goldblum the Villain?

by Ryan Britt

If you told a kid in 1993, that by the time they were in their 30s in 2017, a new Jurassic Park movie would be about rescuing dinosaurs from Isla Nublar, that kid would be pissed because it was basically the idea they already wrote down in their Trapper Keeper. Meaning, the trailer for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is pretty awesome.

On Thursday, Universal released the first full trailer for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, the sequel to 2015’s Jurassic World, and the fifth film in the series which started with Jurassic Park in 1993. And unlike Jurassic World, this film will have at least one character returning from the original film: Jeff Goldblum is back as Dr. Ian Malcolm. The twist this time is that it seems like Dr. Malcolm might actually be the bad guy.

Owen (Chris Pratt) is recruited in the trailer by Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) to mount a rescue mission to Isla Nublar, which is about to erupt at any second, killing all the dinosaurs that live there. The trailer suggests that the question of protecting the cloned dinosaurs as though they were like any other endangered species has become politically sticky. And in re-hashing his “life finds a way” speech from the first Jurassic Park, Dr. Malcolm (Goldblum) seems like he could be in favor of just letting the dinosaurs die out…again. “These creatures were here before us,” he says ominously. “And if we’re not careful, they’ll be here after us.”

Thank God. He's still wearing all black.

What more do you need? Dr. Malcom is clearly the villain of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. We’re willing to bet he’ll actually try to prevent Owen and Claire from saving the dinosaurs. Hopefully, Dr. Grant (Sam Neil) will have to come out of retirement and talk some sense into Malcolm, yet again.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is out everywhere on June 22.
