Can the Titans keep winning ugly?

The Tennessee Titans don’t play the most aesthetically pleasing football, relying on lots of running and a stout defense to grit out low-margin wins. But it’s worked, and the team looks to keep pace in the AFC South with a win against the Arizona Cardinals. A hive mind of about 30 NFL fans predicts the Titans will win Sunday.

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Blaine Gabbert — starting in place of Carson Palmer, who is injured for the season — did manage to engineer one victory over an AFC South team with his recent win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, but then that was a classic vengeance game against his old team. There are no such stakes for the Cardinals as they take on the Titans, who have won six of seven, albeit with five of those wins coming against teams with losing records — and don’t ask about what happened in the one loss of that stretch against the Pittsburgh Steelers. But hey, the Cardinals do have a losing record, so what’s the problem?

To predict the result of this and other games, Unanimous A.I. used what’s known as swarm intelligence to forecast the week’s slate. About 30 NFL fans worked together as a hive mind to make picks. As you can see in the animation below, each participant controlled a little golden magnet and used it to drag the puck toward the answer they thought was the most likely outcome. As the users saw the puck move toward a particular outcome, it triggers a psychological response. They readjust their decision-making, building toward a consensus. Here’s Unanimous A.I. founder Louis Rosenberg explaining swarm intelligence at a recent TEDx Talk.

Unanimous A.I. has made some scarily accurate predictions in the past using swarm intelligence, as our previous article explains. For instance, the swarm went a perfect 7-0 in its most recommended picks for a recent English Premier League slate.

The hive mind was almost evenly split between a low and high confidence pick for the Titans, before settling on a high confidence pick with 78 percent brainpower.

The swarm likes the Titans to win by four to six points, with 84 percent brainpower behind that prediction. The Vegas line favors the Titans by three.

The game kicks off 4:05 p.m. Eastern Sunday on CBS.
