4 Guesses Why Rey Swings Kylo's Lightsaber in the New 'Last Jedi' Trailer

Supreme Leader Snoke’s blood red throne room is undoubtedly teeming with dark energy and plenty of threats for Rey in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. They’re the kind of threats that might change a person, even someone as undeniably good as Rey.

Very little is actually known about the plot of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, though that hasn’t stopped Star Wars fans from going out of their minds while trying to predict every little twist and turn director Rian Johnson could present them with.

One thing fans probably didn’t see coming? Rey wielding Kylo Ren’s lightsaber.

In the latest Last Jedi trailer, which premiered Thursday, there is a brief shot of Ridley’s heroic Rey summoning Kylo’s famous pronged lightsaber from somewhere offscreen using the Force. It snaps into her hand and Rey immediately takes up a tense stance, focusing on whatever threat is in front of her. Snoke’s Praetorian Guards go on the defensive immediately, raising their weapons to take Rey on.

Somehow, it seems like Kylo’s lightsaber might be able to slice through their weapons without much trouble.

But why the hell is Rey using Kylo’s lightsaber in the first place? Here are three theories as to why that might be.

WTF REY

4. Rey Left Luke’s Lightsaber on Ahch-To With Him After She Leaves

A good portion of The Last Jedi is expected to take place on Ahch-To as Luke Skywalker begins to train Rey in the Force. Luke is scared of Rey, though, and there are dark forces at play, so it would make sense for Rey to eventually go off-planet in pursuit of something (or someone) else. As Rey might be getting her own lightsaber in Last Jedi, maybe she left Luke’s behind and is traveling somewhere to make a new one but is captured by the First Order along the way.

She doesn’t seem to have Luke’s blue lightsaber on her person during this brief shot, so it would make sense why she’d need at least some sort of weapon.

3. Rey’s Gone to the Dark Side

Just because Rey is using a red lightsaber belonging to a Dark side user doesn’t mean she’s going fully bad in The Last Jedi. Not that’s stopping anyone from saying she will.

2. Kylo Stole Rey’s Lightsaber, So She’s Just Returning the Favor

As it seems Rey will land herself in Snoke’s throne room at one point, it makes sense for Kylo to be there. It would also make sense for Kylo’s salty butt to take his grandfather’s lightsaber back, as he was so determined to have it in The Force Awakens. He couldn’t believe it when a mere scavenger was able to summon the saber instead of him.

If Kylo takes Rey’s lightsaber, then it’s only fair that she take his in return. Finders keepers!

1. Rey and Kylo Are Related

Fans have firmly believed that Rey is a Skywalker by blood since she was first introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Lightsabers often have an understanding of who they belong to (remember how Luke’s lightsaber called to Rey?) and if Rey and Kylo are related by blood then it would probably be a lot easier for Rey to summon Kylo’s lightsaber through the Force.

Anakin Skywalker’s (potential) heirs aren’t to be trifled with.
