God, that was so awesome. Despite all of the anxieties swirling around U.S. Soccer at the time — questions about Jurgen Klinnsman’s direction with the team, the controversial cut of former captain Landon Donovan, the roster that featured almost exclusively World Cup rookies — the U.S. got control of the ball in the opening moments of their first Cup game again Ghana and an opportunistic Clint Dempsey smashed it home 29 seconds into the game.
