'Last Jedi' Spoilers: Cast Explains Plurals, First Word, and Timeline

by Ryan Britt

The latest big spoiler from The Last Jedi is easily the fact that Mark Hamill does a killer Harrison Ford impression. On Friday, the cast of The Last Jedi — Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Mark Hamill, Kelly Marie Tran, John Boyega, Andy Serkis, Oscar Issac, Laura Dern, Gwendoline Christie — along with director Rian Johnson, appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! where they were faced with all the questions they were almost certainly unable to address with straight answers.

Still, Kimmel wrangled a few details out of the group. Here are cool things we learned from the mega-interview.

Minor spoilers from Star Wars: Episode VIII— The Last Jedi may follow.

Is the “Jedi” in the Title Singular or Plural?

At one point, Kimmel asked Johnson about the ongoing debate on whether or not the title of the film refers to one Jedi or many. Part of this ongoing kerfuffle has been exacerbated by the fact that non-English translations of the film’s title have suggested Jedi should be read as a plural. But Johnson told Kimmel it’s singular. “In my mind, it was always singular,” he said. “It always referred to Luke.”

‘Last Jedi’ Happens Right After ‘The Force Awakens’ Ends

It’s not clear what will happen in the first scene, but Johnson did confirm that The Last Jedi will “pick up right after the events of the last movie.” Again, this doesn’t necessarily mean the first scene of the film will be Rey and Luke on the cliff, but it doesn’t mean that won’t be the first scene either.

Adam Driver Supplies Kids With Lightsabers IRL

Shocking no one, the Kylo Ren isn’t a villain in real life. Driver told Kimmel that on Halloween, he likes to hook-up the kids in his building with Star Wars costumes. “Supplying them with lightsabers and helmets is my job,” he said.

Hamill On Luke’s Age, Harrison Ford’s Voice

Arguably the biggest star in the film, Mark Hamill, continued his recent penchant for cranky lightsaber rattling. This time, he complained lightly about the script for The Force Awakens making Luke sound way older than he should be. “It’s only been 30 years since Return of the Jedi, what’s this Methuselah look you have for me?”

Hamill also recounted a story about keeping the big secret in The Empire Strikes Back to himself. And the best part was, Harrison Ford apparently gave him shit for it in 1980. Doing a solid Ford impression Hamill related what Ford said to him after the first screening of Empire, and the ensuing shock of learning Vader was Luke’s father. “Hey kid, you didn’t fucking tell me that.” Hamill also admitted Harrison Ford doesn’t really approve of Hamill’s impression of him.

Fan Creator of “Your Snoke Theory Sucks” Appeared Briefly

Back in 2016, Inverse spoke to comedian Steele Saunders, creator of the “Your Snoke Theory Sucks” sticker, t-shirt, and hilarious phenomenon. As Kimmel was grilling Serkis about Snoke in The Last Jedi (Serkis revealed nothing) Kimmel referenced Saunders and his ongoing Snoke jokes. The camera then revealed Saunders was in the audience of the Kimmel show, sporting his signature shirt.

The First Word Spoken in the Movie Is…

Perhaps the only true spoiler was revealed by Rian Johnson. When Kimmel asked him to give away one thing, perhaps the first word, Johnson obliged. The first word of The Last Jedi is “We’re” as in “we are.” So, the question is, who says this? Suspiciously, this doesn’t sound like something Luke or Rey would say, considering the context of their meeting. But then again, maybe Luke’s first line is just: “We’re going to have to have a long talk about where you got that lightsaber.”

The Last Jedi is out everywhere on December 15.
