Rey Should Get Her Own Double-Sided Yellow Lightsaber in 'The Last Jedi'
All it takes is a ripe kyber crystal and some spare parts.
With barely more than two weeks to go before Star Wars: Episode VIII — The Last Jedi finally hits movie theaters around the world, we’re all desperately wondering if our biggest questions about Rey, Luke Skywalker, and Kylo Ren will be answered.
In the annual spirit of the latest Star Wars movie releasing just before the holidays, Inverse is counting down with a daily wishlist of cool stuff we want to see in The Last Jedi. Today: Rey ditching that blue Skywalker lightsaber for her own unique design, preferably yellow, because that just seems right somehow.
The following speculates on what could happen in The Last Jedi, meaning, if any of this comes true, then everything below could be considered an intuitive spoiler.
We’ve dreamt of Rey getting her own lightsaber for awhile, but it’s really not that outlandish. A crucial rite of passage in the life of any Jedi is the creation of their own unique weapon. Even Luke made his own in the original trilogy just before the events of Return of the Jedi, so maybe Rey should too?
The blue saber may have called to Rey at Maz Kanata’s castle, and even though it looks like she’ll continue to use it for the duration of The Last Jedi, we can’t help but wonder what Rey might look like wielding a Darth Maul-style double-sided saber.
Most trailers for The Last Jedi make it look like Rey is feeling a little lost, and she’s in need of guidance. An exciting next step for her could be defining what kind of Force-wielder she wants to be by creating her own weapon rather than using the loaner. Will she stay on the Light side of the Force? Or will she be tempted towards the Dark? Maybe she’ll land somewhere in between — which could make orange or yellow a perfect color.
Traditionally, a Jedi in training would find a kyber crystal and use it as the core power source for their own weapon. They’d build it telekinetically by way of the Force. It happened offscreen for Luke, but in The Clone Wars, we see a young Wookie and other younglings perform the ritualistic assembly:

We’ve already got confirmation that Luke Skywalker is the titular “Last Jedi” in Episode VIII, so it’s pretty much definite that Rey won’t join him in the Jedi ranks — which also means she won’t follow the same traditional path.
Nonetheless, Rey will definitely develop her skills as a Force user and lightsaber wielder under the tutelage of Luke Skywalker; we’ve already seen as much in the trailers. And even at the very beginning of The Force Awakens, Rey was talented in using her quarterstaff, so if given the choice, it makes more sense for her to opt for a double-sided blade.
Whether or not she’s tempted to the Dark side or teams up with Kylo Ren in some capacity, Rey’s journey is only beginning, and we can’t wait to see what the future has in store for her.
