Thor's Look Will Change Again Between 'Ragnarok' and 'Infinity War'

Loki probably won’t think Thor looks so much like Odin anymore when Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters.

This post contains spoilers for the end of Thor: Ragnarok and, potentially, for Marvel’s upcoming Avengers: Infinity War.

At the end of Thor: Ragnarok, Marvel fans saw Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, the new king of Asgard, lose his eye to Cate Blanchett’s Hela. A new swath of pre-Infinity War photos, though, indicate that Thor won’t spend too much time without both eyes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Clearly, a magic eyepatch doesn’t fit in with Thor’s new, darker look.

Vanity Fair unveiled its December cover story on Monday, featuring a first look at the cast of Infinity War. The cover art and featured photos, taken by photographer Jason Bell, gives Marvel fans something fun to look at until the film’s premiere, but the most interesting parts of the photos are when Hemsworth’s Thor is hanging around.

In the photos, Thor’s bearing his hammer, Mjolnir, and rocking two eyes instead of one.

Another VF story addresses this problem:

The hammer and cape—which were broken and torn in Ragnarok—may be back for the photo shoot but that doesn’t mean they’ll return in Avengers: Infinity War. As for Thor’s most significant lost accessory, the eye that was plucked out of his head by Cate Blanchett’s Hela, all that remains of that trauma in our gallery is a light scar running down the right side of Hemsworth’s face.

One of Bell’s photos, which features Thor, Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Shuri (Letitia Wright), and Nebula (Karen Gillan), gives the best look at Thor and, if you look closely, you can see a scar running down the right side of his face. Supposedly, that’s all that’s left of Thor’s run-in with Hela by the time Infinity War starts.

Perhaps the VF feature might just be trying to spare Marvel fans from Ragnarok spoilers, as the Ragnarok trailers and promotional photos always showed Thor with two eyes so as to not spoil anything. But, if that were the case, why would he have that scar?

As to how he gets it back? Thor’s adopted brother Loki is a magician — maybe Loki magicked up a new eye for his brother even after that run-in with what’s probably Thanos’s ship at the end of Ragnarok. Or maybe Thor knows some Asgardian eye-growing-back trick that Odin didn’t. We’ll have to wait and see.

Avengers: Infinity War premieres in theaters on May 4, 2018.
