'Rick and Morty' Clip Is a Mr. Poopybutthole Easter Egg Bonanza

After the trick they pulled on April Fools’ Day, Rick and Morty fans should’ve expected that Adult Swim might do something unexpected as another holiday approaches. No, new video uploaded to the channel’s YouTube page on Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving, isn’t the Season 4 premiere, but it is a surprisingly emotional look at Mr. Poopybutthole’s backstory, and it’s jam-packed with Easter eggs.

It also might’ve just disproved possibly the biggest Rick and Morty fan theory out there, but we’ll get to that in a bit.

The clip, “The Poop in My Pants,” see’s the Smith family’s totally real former friend Mr. Poopybutthole looking wistfully through a photo album, revealing how he and his wife met. After Beth shot Mr. Poopybutthole, he left the Smith household, but as the final post-credit scene of Season 3 alluded, he ended up okay. Look, here he is after getting his G.E.D.

The interesting thing here is the “My Federation Rewards” ticket, which places Mr. Poopybutthole in Earth C-137 — Rick and Morty’s main home reality. A popular fan theory posited that the reason why Mr. Poopybutthole appeared to have joined the family out of nowhere was because he had actually been there the whole time. That episode, unbeknownst to viewers, was just focusing on a different reality than normal episodes do, and in this reality, Mr. Poopybutthole had always been part of the Smith family. There’s other evidence supporting this theory, but this ticket seems to place Mr. Poopybutthole in the main C-137 reality.

Other Easter eggs reveal that Mr. Poopybutthole was actually present for a lot of Season 3, further suggesting he’s living in the same reality as C-137 Rick and Morty.

That helicopter in the background looks like it’s part of Pickle Rick’s fight with Jaguar.

The photo on the right shows a Varrix, one of the creatures that Jerry’s alien girlfriend from “the ABCs of Beth,” wanted to kill. The pics on the right indicate that Mr. and Mrs. Poopybutthole did the same toxin purge as Rick and Morty did in “Rest and Ricklaxation.”

The whole “sick cat dying” part of the video was a hell of a gut punch, but, hey, there’s a plumbus dog toy.

This pregnancy picture of Mrs. Poopybutthole is a clear spoof of Beyonce’s recent photo shoot, but the “congquakulations!” card is from Summer, meaning that Mr. Poopybutthole keeps in touch with Summer, at least, and that things are okay enough between them that her note would make the scrapbook.

While this video reveals a lot about Mr. Poopybutthole, it doesn’t give any clues about when Season 4 of Rick and Morty will premiere.
