New 'Last Jedi' Trailer Swaps Rey's Lightsaber for Her Staff

by Ryan Britt

Up until now, almost every image we’ve seen of Rey in action in Star Wars: Episode VIII — The Last Jedi depicts her swinging her lightsaber. In fact, the most iconic scenes in most trailersshow her swinging it in a way that echoes a move Kylo Ren used on her. But now, that’s all different. A new trailer shows Rey doing the same moves she did with a lightsaber, only this time, with her trademark staff from The Force Awakens.

On Wednesday, the latest TV spot for The Last Jedi focuses on Rey’s journey and her seemingly being concerned about her inner darkness. It also shows her practicing her staff moves in the exact same way we’ve seen her swinging her lightsaber in other footage. What’s going on here? Is this a Rey from a parallel universe?

Here’s what her swinging staff action looks like in the new footage.

And here’s what a very similar scene looks like in previous trailers.

So what’s the deal? Are we dealing with an alternate take in this new trailer or is this something else? It seems like the answer is no, this isn’t an alternate take, but instead, snippets from the same scene. Here’s what probably happens: Rey is training with her staff, gets frustrated, eyes the lightsaber in her bag, and then gets serious with it. This produces the satisfaction we’ve seen in some of the other footage.

Or maybe not? The last two Star Wars films — The Force Awakens and Rogue One — contained a slew of scenes in their trailers not found in the films. Meaning, Rey’s staff spinning versus lightsaber spinning scenes both may not end up being in The Last Jedi the way we see them in these trailers.

The Last Jedi opens everywhere on December 15.
