The Jacksonville Jaguars continue their shocking muddle toward respectable mediocrity — and maybe more than that! — after years of being dreadful. The Cincinnati Bengals are working on their own reversal, as they look to reach 4-4 after an 0-3 start. A hive mind of about 30 NFL fans predicts the Jaguars will win a close one Sunday.

A big boon for Jacksonville is the return from injury of star rookie Leonard Fournette (who is not, for the record, pictured above, as that’s teammate Corey Grant). The Jaguars’ excellent defense looks on paper to be a good match-up against the Bengals, who have at least returned to “just about solid” after starting the season “worryingly dreadful.”

To predict the result of this and other games, Unanimous A.I. used what’s known as swarm intelligence to forecast the week’s slate. More than 40 NFL fans worked together as a hive mind to make picks. As you can see in the animation below, each participant controlled a little golden magnet and used it to drag the puck toward the answer they thought was the most likely outcome. As the users saw the puck move toward a particular outcome, it triggers a psychological response. They readjust their decision-making, building toward a consensus. Here’s Unanimous A.I. founder Louis Rosenberg explaining swarm intelligence at a recent TEDx Talk.

Unanimous A.I. has made some scarily accurate predictions in the past using swarm intelligence, as our previous article explains. For instance, the swarm went a perfect 7-0 in its most recommended picks for a recent English Premier League slate.

The hive mind likes Jacksonville to win here, but with some reservation: It’s only a low confidence pick with 80 percent brainpower.

Unanimous A.I.

The hive mind likes Jacksonville to win by four to six points, with 82 percent brainpower behind the pick. Since the Vegas line is Jacksonville by 5.5 points, probably best to steer clear of betting on this one and just enjoy the return of Fournette.

The game kicks off 1 p.m. Eastern Sunday on CBS.
