Pacific Rim Could Crossover with Godzilla and King Kong's MonsterVerse

Legendary / Warner Bros.

Who would win in a fight between the iconic monster Godzilla and the high-tech titans of the Pacific Rim universe, the Jaegers? The question might seem ridiculous at first, but there’s a chance this matchup could eventually happen.

Speaking to Collider at New York Comic-Con 2017 in an interview published Friday, Pacific Rim: Uprising director Steven S. DeKnight revealed that a crossover between Pacific Rim and the MonsterVerse (home to big names such as King Kong and Godzilla) isn’t totally out of the question.

“I won’t say there’s an Easter Egg but there’s been a lot of discussion about that possibility [of crossing over]. Look I think it would be fantastic to have the Pacific Rim universe join Legendary’s Monster Universe, it seems like a natural step. And part of the big overall plan after the third movie we’ve talked about is that could happen, it’s always a possibility. It’s by far not a certainty; it’s merely theoretical at this point, but as a fan myself I would love to see that happen.”
Legendary / Warner Bros.

Even though it would be great, barring all the companies currently involved with both franchises reaching an agreement, this doesn’t seem likely. While Legendary produces both film series, the MonsterVerse is a partnership between them and Warner Bros., due to a deal they have that follows the conclusion of their partnership with the company in 2013. Meanwhile, as a result of Legendary moving to Universal in the same year, Universal is producing the second Pacific Rim film instead of Warner Bros., who produced the first.

Story-wise, though, it would be no trouble at all to include Godzilla and King Kong in the Pacific Rim franchise, as the kaiju, the monsters of Pacific Rim, come from interdimensional breaches.

If a crossover does end up happening, the MonsterVerse characters will no doubt come to blows with the Jaegers. But since both Godzilla and King Kong are ultimately forces for balance, there would have to be some kind of team-up.

Perhaps they’re already thinking about how Godzilla and King Kong’s fight in 2020’s Godzilla vs. King Kong could somehow segue into the Pacific Rim universe.

Pacific Rim: Uprising is expected to premiere on March 23, 2018.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is expected to premiere on March 22, 2019.
