Though The Tick already changed costumes once in the Amazon series, there are already plans to give the Wild Blue Yonder’s look an upgrade at some point in the future.
At the New York Comic-Con panel for The Tick on Saturday, creator Ben Edlund explained that The Tick’s current outfit won’t be his last one. As part of his response to an audience member asking why The Tick’s costume changed, Edlund said, “The suit evolved and is evolving.” Later, he added: “We’re still in the process of [changing The Tick’s costume]…It’s going to look even better.”
Of course, Edlund also gave some of the reasons that The Tick’s costume changed in the first place. “The initial suit…I think we all agreed when were doing the pilot we wanted to see the look improve. And it just happens to be that I think that works in the story,” Edlund said. He then went on to talk about how the show briefly addressed the hero swapping his scaly outfit for something a bit more angular by the second episode, before just “[marching] on.” Edlund continued: “A lot of what took place in regards to [the costume change], that’s something that [Peter Serafinowicz, who plays The Tick], you know, you had to wear this thing for a long time. And you got very intimate with some of the less comfortable details of that creature.”
Executive producer Barry Josephson chimed in, saying that the first change was at least in part a response to audience feedback. “That was a great opportunity, though, with Amazon Prime, where they streamed the pilot and listened to the audience, and made some changes that I think were great,” he said.
Even though The Tick’s first outfit wasn’t awful, his current costume was still a nice change for the character, especially since the shift was referenced in such a perfect and casual manner. While we don’t know how drastically different the new costume will be, hopefully it manages to follow this upward trajectory for The Tick’s appearance. Or at the very least, be addressed in a similarly awesome way.
The first half of The Tick: Season 1 is available for streaming on Amazon. The second half of Season 1 will premiere on February 23, 2018.
