Amazon Sells A Shirt Wildly Offensive to Anorexia and Bulimia Survivors

Disgusting on so many levels.

Anorexia nervosa has the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. Still, it’s being used as the punchline on a sweatshirt currently being sold on Amazon — needless to say, people are completely disgusted.

“Anorexia,” the shirt reads. “Like bulimia except with self control.” According to its Amazon listing, the hoodie is supposed to be for women, who are disproportionately affected by eating disorders.

Limited information suggests the shirt is being sold by a company called ArturoBuch, which proudly features other t-shirts with slogans like “Bros Before Hoes” and “Best Dad and You Know It!” While the shirt seems to have been available for purchase on Amazon since 2015, only recently did doctors and eating disorder survivors catch wind of it.

Many have also left one-star reviews on Amazon and called for the product to be removed immediately. Some said they’ll be boycotting the online retailer until the hoodie is pulled:

It’s unclear how or why this sweatshirt ended up on Amazon, especially if people have been criticizing it for years. In any case, this is about so much more than a sweatshirt. It’s seriously dehumanizing to the millions of people who’ve struggled with an eating disorder, past and present. According to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANRAD), approximately 8 million people in the US have anorexia, bulimia, or another eating disorder. That translates to about three percent of the country’s population. So yeah, no one’s laughing.

ArturoBuch did not immediately respond to Inverse’s request for comment, but we will update this post if and when we hear back.
