‘Rick and Morty’ Is More Like ‘Doctor Who’ Than ‘Game of Thrones’
But there's still a lot more swearing in 'Rick and Morty.'
The Doctor and Rick Sanchez have more in common than weird spaceships and unbeatable brains. Their shows, Doctor Who and Rick and Morty, respectively, are relatively simple to understand at the end of the day. And that’s just how Dan Harmon likes it.
While discussing the future of Adult Swim’s wildly popular show, Rick and Morty co-creator Harmon told Entertainment Weekly in an article published Tuesday that the duo’s adventures aren’t exactly planned out.
“We still consider Rick and Morty a largely modular timeless show and you can pick up and watch any episode and that crack rock will get you just as high as any other crack rock,” Harmon said. “Unlike a truly serialized show like Game of Thrones, there’s a backbone to the show where it’s Rick and Morty going on adventures and it’s fun, like Doctor Who.”
Just like Doctor Who, casual viewers don’t need too much of an introduction or an understanding of a character’s history to really get into any one episode. You just have to know that the Doctor is a time-traveling, shape-shifting alien in a blue box and that Rick is a drunken mad scientist who likes to drag his hapless grandson, Morty, on adventures.
Both shows are as simple as that. Rick and Morty just might include a little bit more swearing than the Doctor is used to hearing.
