The latest trailer for The Flash Season 4 focuses on Team Flash’s new leader after they all lost Barry to the Speed Force in the Season 3 finale. It’s Iris West.
What Happened
The CW released a new extended trailer for The Flash Season 4, and it goes all in on Iris’s new role as the leader of Team Flash.
She might be focused and driven in her waking life as a reporter and leadership of a crime-fighting team, but she can’t bring herself to get over Barry. Their formerly shared apartment is a dismal scene of face-down photos and Iris sleeping on the couch.
She’s grieving. As Joe points out, nobody really got closure after Barry left. He wasn’t dead, but he was seemingly gone for good, which makes it that much harder to move on. It’s hard for everyone when Season 4 kicks off six months after Barry left.
Iris leads the team assertively, taking Barry’s final words to heart. She wants to keep moving forward, to focus on saving people. Shockingly, she disagrees with Cisco’s desire to bring Barry back. “It’s like you don’t even want him back!” he accuses.
Cisco uses a modified version of the Speed Force Cannon anyway, and it seemingly works. Barry turns up elsewhere a little addle-brained from what to him was an eternity in the Speed Force.
He’s back just in time, too, because there’s some kind of magical samurai that want to fight The Flash, and it looks like this new meta might kidnap Iris to get his way.
What It Means
At least in the first episode, the conflict between Cisco and Iris might feature prominently — and it even looks like Iris might emerge as the new protagonist. But she’s lost hope, and needs to rediscover it.
It looks like Cisco, Wally, and Joe appear on the airstrip where Cisco fires the Speed Force Cannon, so it’s possible they’re doing this without Iris’s blessing.
What’s Next
It’s all but certain that Barry will be back by the end of the very first episode — Season 3 undid Flashpoint just as quickly. But there’s still a lot we still don’t know about the Season 4 premiere of The Flash:
What is the glowing red orb that Cisco uses with the Cannon to open the breach to the Speed Force? What are the weird symbols Barry drew all over the wall in the police station? Why did Julian disappear? Where is Caitlin and will she really return to the team?
We’ll have to wait to find out.
The Flash Season 4 premieres on The CW Tuesday, October 10, at 8 p.m. Eastern.
