The entire crew of the USS Discovery is finally getting some screen time in the latest trailer for Star Trek: Discovery. And in Captain Lorca’s words “No other crew would have a chance of pulling this off. Just us.”
On Wednesday, CBS released the latest trailer for Star Trek: Discovery. Of all the footage released so far, this one gives the broadest look at the entire crew of the Discovery including Captain Lorca, Lt. Stamets, Saru, and Cadet Tilly. Michael Burnham and Captain Georgiou are here, too, but this feels like the first trailer that presents the complete ensemble.
The new footage also suggests that Discovery will have abilities that the USS Shenzhou or other Starfleet ships don’t have. “Discovery can take us to places we never dreamed of reaching.” This seems to heavily imply that Discovery’s velocity is faster than anything else Starfleet is capable of. Now, this could mean two things: Discovery is the fastest ship in Star Trek, bar none. Or, it is simply faster than the NX ships from the prequel series Enterprise.
“Speed” on Star Trek is a weird concept only because the idea of a warp factor is a bit of a misnomer. Essentially, spaceships on Star Trek are actually warping the fabric of space in order to get to where they want to go. While this notion is mostly glazed over throughout every single iteration of the franchise, the original pilot episode “The Cage” did find Captain Pike mentioning a “Time warp factor,” instead of the more ordinary “warp factor.” In terms of the Trek canon, the events of “The Cage” are pretty much happening within a year of the events on Discovery.
With that in mind, it’s possible that Discovery may casually reconcile the “time warp” concept from “The Cage” with everything else we’ve learned about warp drive thus far.
Star Trek: Discovery time-warps onto CBS All-Access on September 24.
